Position Description

The Department of Orthopedics is seeking Advance Practice Providers (APP) for overnight coverage.  The APP in this role will provide comprehensive inpatient support to orthopedic inpatients at the UIHC Medical Center North Liberty (UIHC MCNL). The APP will work in collaboration with Internal Medicine physician hospitalists, Orthopedics, Emergency Medicine, and ancillary groups to provide quality care to patients. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the APP will help facilitate care to ensure timely discharges. The APP will serve a critical role in appropriate hand offs at the start and end of shifts.  In addition, the APP will respond to codes and rapid responses, as part of a larger team.

The position is to provide patient coverage from 6pm-6am, Sunday through Saturday.  A schedule will be determine with the input of candidates selected.

Duties to include:

  • Provide comprehensive care to orthopedic inpatients at the UIHC MCNL with backup support from on call Medicine and Orthopedic physicians.
  • Evaluate inpatients with urgent and emergent needs and work with the team as needed to deliver care.
  • Through overnight work, help facilitate timely admissions, discharges, and transfers as part of a team.
  • Obtain complete health and medical histories from the patient and family. Perform comprehensive physical exams.
  • Facilitate inpatient consultations via telehealth for any consulting service that is not available at UIHC MCNL. Consult/collaborate with other care team members. Use judgment to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address health issues.
  • Complete patient medical records, reports, and forms to record treatment for treatment record and billing purposes. Improve quality of care by performing chart reviews and participating on performance improvement committees.
  • Provide health education to patients and medical education to health professions students and residents. Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff.
  • Establish and maintain procedures and systems to assure staff compliance with policies and standards of care. Initiate corrective action as needed. Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations. Assure team provides effective collaboration/communications. May provide feedback and coaching to other team members to assure quality of specialized care. Assist with identification and implementation of process improvement projects and service line advancements in order to improve patient outcomes and decrease complications. Assist with implementation of methods to capture appropriate billing/coding documentation in the EMR.

The new University of Iowa Health Care North Liberty Campus will open in the Spring of 2025.  This 469,000 square foot facility will be home to UI Health Care’s nationally recognized Orthopedics service line, offering comprehensive, coordinated, and accessible care across the outpatient, inpatient and surgical venues. Required Qualifications:

ARNP: A Master's degree is required. A Master's degree or DNP in Nursing is preferred. If Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required. Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required. Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.

  • 1-3 years of patient care experience gained through education, job experience, or rotations is required. 
  • Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of general patient care is required.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Highly Desired Qualification:

  • Experience working in a medicine, emergency medicine, or orthopedic setting is highly desired. 

Desired Qualification: 

  • Strong interest and/or experience in understanding revenue capture.
